Rachael Eden was born in Whitley Bay in North Tyneside and studied at the University of Brighton, receiving her BA Hons in Fine Art Painting in 2015.
From basic AF to bombastic, minimal to maximal, low class and high art.
Eden's work reflects the post-internet era with it's short attention spans and over saturation of images- more photos are taken in two minutes than existed in total 150 years ago and while the quantity of images has increased the quality has diminished. Selfies in particular only focus on one part of the image being beautiful, it is this that often attracts her to the people caught in the background- the unwitting participants. To contrast this she also borrow forms from classical paintings, imagery from old reference books and gradients from WordArt.
Eden uses found images to allow her to play with the material qualities of the paint, using them as a frame to drape paint over. She allows the features to blur into mere shapes in a composition and then find them again- like staring at a magic eye puzzle. Colours that start off sweet become overblown, garish and anxiety provoking. This is at odds with Eden's interest in efficiency of line, again mixing minimal and maximal.
The end result is a sugar rush- mouth-watering paint, slick lines and sweet but sour colours that leave you jittery and wide-eyed.
